Devs say DEGRADE feature reduces playability of pirated titles
In an interview with PC Gamer Bohemia Interactive chief executive Marek Španěl talked about Digital Rights Management in their game and the approach they use to try and combat piracy.
The developer is known for their DEGRADE tech which takes pirated games and, over time, makes them unplayable. The DRM will, in a shooter for example, give pirates lower accuracy in both singleplayer and multiplayer campaigns.
Bohemia Interactive is also looking for solutions to avoid ruining the experience for customers that legally obtain their titles. Španěl said, “We’re trying to cut off this vicious circle where piracy hurts owners of legitimate copies ‘protected’ with annoying copy protection DRM systems.”
He added, “The philosophy is not to try to prevent counterfeit and pirated games from running, but instead (or in addition) to degrade the end user experience of such copies. The motto is: Pirated games are not worth playing, original games do not degrade.”
