Ubisoft claim most gamers will be unaffected
Ubisoft have confirmed that any changes to a PC’s hardware could count towards Anno 2070‘s three activations, according to Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
Ubisoft’s comments after a user named Guru3D discovered that Anno 2070’s DRM, known as the Tages system, only allows the game to be activated – that is, installed - three times. However, changing out parts, such as your graphics card, will also use one of the activations.
In a statement to the website, Ubisoft said: “While it’s correct that copies of Anno include three activations and that changing hardware may trigger the need for reactivation, the vast majority of Anno customers never encounter this scenario. On the rare occasion when a customer does need additional activations, Ubisoft customer service is available to quickly resolve the situation, and we encourage those customers to contact us directly.”
Ubisoft is well-known within the PC community for tough anti-piracy practices, particularly their always-online DRM. Such tactics may have contributed to a decline in PC game sales for them.
