Platform available in North America and the UK
Publisher EA has announced that its digital games distribution and social network Origin for Mac has moved into alpha stage and is available right now for a limited number of users.
EA states that the alpha is live for players in North America and the UK at this time, with expansion coming in the near future. Origin offers game features like cloud storage and auto-updates for games within the service. The cloud saves mean you can continue your game from any Origin-enabled Mac. Social features such as friends lists and chat are also supported. Users can chat across platforms and games with the Origin overlay.
The announcement stated that the digital storefront will be available soon, but the alpha does not currently support it. When Origin launches with the store, EA says a library of EA and partner titles will be available for purchase. Origin’s one-click streaming to Twitch.tv is going to be added as soon as possible, but is also unavailable for now.
Any Mac gamer who fits the system requirements is encouraged to download the alpha build and provide feedback on their experience. Those who do participate in the Origin alpha on Mac will be treated to a free copy of the game Bookworm by PopCap Games.
