Visit Rapture in Bioshock Infinite!!!
There’s an awesome Easter egg hidden in the heart of BioShock Infinite‘s Columbia which allows you to briefly revisit the underwater city of Rapture. Uncovering this gem requires a bit of effort, but it’s well worth it not only for the nostalgia factor, but for the rewards you acquire as well. Note that the description of how to access this hidden area requires very minor spoilers (nothing story related).
The first step happens shortly after you wash up on the beach in Battleship Bay. When Elizabeth asks you to choose a pendant you MUST pick the cage… choose the bird and it won’t work. The next part takes place in the Plaza of Zeal. You must do this BEFORE visiting either the gunsmith or the Good Time Club.
In the far left corner from where you enter the plaza there is a building that appears to be a laundry or clothing sweatshop. Inside this structure is a tear with a red glow around it. (It’s the tear from which you can hear Fortunate Son by Credence Clearwater Revival, so there’s no confusion… though it’s really the only tear in the area, so that shouldn’t be an issue.) This tear is your portal to Rapture. Make sure you are equipped with the hand cannon (found just as you enter the area) and the sniper rifle (found in a building directly to the left of where you start).
Make sure you don’t approach too closely… if you do, the tear will close and you’ll be out of luck. Point your cursor directly at the heart of the tear and launch the following attacks in rapid succession, and in the following order:
Shock jockey, Hand cannon, Possession, Sniper rifle, Murder of crows.
If it doesn’t work on the first try, you’ll need to reload the last checkpoint to try again. If you do it fast enough, the tear will rupture, and you’ll find yourself standing in the entry of Fort Frolic, looking even more worse for wear than it did back in 2007. You can explore the hallway to your heart’s content, but the vending machines are all broken, so there’s really not much to do.
Follow the hallway until you reach the large, circular room with the grand staircase where you first encountered Sander Cohen in the original game. As you step into the area you’ll spot a splicer across the way who yells something along the lines of “What are you doing here DeWitt?! I already killed you!” (a hint at future DLC, maybe?) He then scampers off, and gates drop down sealing you into the area.
If you check the stage area, you’ll find three pieces of amazing gear. You can acquire a shirt that doubles the clip size and amount of ammo you can carry for all weapons, pants that reduce your Salts consumption by 30% when using Vigors, and finally a hat that refills your Salts meter if your health drops below 10%. You can also find three gold bars in the case which had a tonic locked inside it in the original game. Once you’ve gathered all your goodies, climb the stairs and enter the tear at the top to return to Columbia.
NOTE: I discovered this while playing on 1999 mode… I don’t know whether that’s a requirement or not. Let us know and we’ll update it!
