CCP reveals more detail on new profession coming in next expansion

Eve Online: Odyssey hacking mini-game

Can you hack it?

June 4 is rapidly approaching and releasing that day is Eve Online: Odyssey. In anticipation of the launch, developer CCP Bayesian took to the game’s official blog to explain a few of the new professions, focusing on the new hacking profession.

Wanting an approach that was not too time intensive, Bayesian said the team settled on a card game layout. The features are similar to those found in roguelikes and exploration-based dungeon crawlers, but with a hacking twist. Bayesian said, “We like this because it furthers the feeling of exploring unknown, hazardous places in the computer system controlling the object you are hacking. We hit most of the roguelike tropes, with procedurally generated levels, turn-based combat and ‘permadeath’ – albeit on a scale that is suited to shorter games.”

In Eve, hacking will begin with the player activating their hacking module on a selected target, which then triggers a UI window. In order to hack the system gamers will have to explore nearby nodes adjacent to ones they have already searched. To succeed, they will need to find the core (or cores) and destroy them. After they destroy the core, the contents of the item are searchable.

There will be a number of subsystems present that will attempt to lock players out while others assist them in hacking. Along the way they will also find additional item caches. Each subsystem has its own hit-points and will need to be attacked in order to takeover.
