Visas for international players smooth process for competitors
The US government has officially recognized League of Legends (LoL) eSports competitors, granting them the same work visas reserved for pro athletes. In an interview with Gamespot, Riot eSports manager Nick Allen confirmed the change.
The move will streamline the procedure for international competitors entering the US for competitions.
Allen explained the significance of the status change, “The United States government recognises League of Legends pro-players as professional athletes, and awards visas to essentially work in the United States under that title.”
As it stands LoL players can now apply for the same visa granted to such athletes as NBA, NFL, and NHL players.
Allen commented on the road to this move, “We had a lot of people fighting for this, and it wasn’t something that happened overnight.”
With the change in status, Allen is confident and excited over the prospects, “Now when [international players] come over, it’s a much easier process because they are actually recognized by the government. It’s a huge thing.”
