External hard drive support is a planned feature for the Xbox One, but Microsoft has confirmed that it will not be ready for the console launch.

The announcement comes out of a podcast conducted at PAX by Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb, as reported by Eurogamer. Hryb conveyed that the feature is definitely in the works, “The future plan is to definitely support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360.”

Although he was able to confirm that support is coming, Hryb was not able to say when. He said, “My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”

The Xbox One will come with an internal 500GB console that cannot be replaced. Competitor Sony has announced that its PS4 console will come with a replaceable 500 GB drive, but will not support external memory or installs from an external source.
