The end of Chapter 20 is going to instigate another pause as I’ll be out of town starting on January 22. Though I’ll be returning Feb 1, there will likely not be another story post until Feb 8. I may post something next week, but it won’t be the beginning of Chapter 21.
Get caught up at the story hub. Enjoy!
As Seraph guided the young Cade over to where Aura had suggested he set up camp, the squad’s captain turned back to address the rest of the gathered members. Based on the AI child’s story, there was another issue that needed addressing, and it was one that Seraph would not like. “The Anomaly seems to be in the world as well. We need to make sure that we keep her from meddling and compromising our mission.”
Hawk and Linden nodded immediately, but Peri and Brune hesitated. “How?” Brune asked curtly.
“If she makes an appearance and won’t leave when asked, we will be forced to remove her ourselves.”
“That’s a little drastic, Aura,” Peri replied. “Sounds like she’s of a mind to aid us. She helped the kid escape after all.”
“She’ll help if we ask,” Brune added confidently.
Aura grimaced. She had expected resistance from Brune, but not Peri. “We cannot predict the Anomaly’s motives. With an assignment that is as sensitive as the one we’re on, it would be irresponsible to trust her on a whim.”
Brune just shook his head, but Peri pressed on, “It’s not a whim. She’s helped in the past and she seems to have a connection with Seraph too.”
Aura noticed a sideways glance from Brune when Peri mentioned the Anomaly’s connection with Seraph but ignored it. She was about to quell any further argument when Hawk spoke up, “Perhaps we can speak with her if she does make an appearance. Aura can make a better judgment call when she has a better grasp of the Anomaly’s intentions.”
There was silence for a moment as they all turned to look at her for a reaction. She swallowed what she was going to say and nodded calmly instead, “That seems to be a reasonable solution for now.”
The squad captain inclined her head briefly to Hawk in silent thanks for her assistance. The former military liaison smiled briefly in return.
Seraph chose that moment to rejoin the squad, “Alright, Cade is set up. We should get back on the trail.”
Aura nodded, “He’s right. We’re going to pick up the pace. I aim to catch the horde within the hour. Seraph on point, Gemini, Peri, flanks. Private comm channel only from here on out.”
